The Golden Calf Exodus 32:1-14
Delivered to Smith Chapel UMC on October 12, 2008
What I Didn't Say
Action--We all want action. If we go see a movie and there's no
action, we feel like we've been gypped. If we watch a football or
baseball game and the score is low, we're bored. When there's nothing
happening in the church, we feel the same way.
Some folks will jump from congregation to congregation for this reason.
Sometimes the preaching isn't exciting enough. Sometimes the music
isn't contemporary enough. Sometimes the the programs aren't fresh
enough. So we jump ship. We go to where we think the action is.
The Hebrews got antsy when Moses was up on the mountain for over a
month. There wasn't enough action. So they made the golden calf as a
center of their new, contrived action. It almost cost them big time.
Sometimes it's good to wait out the times of inaction. Inappropriate
action, however exciting, can only bring heartache.
