In a Nutshell--I checked this popular idiom out. It was coined in 1602 by none other than William Shakespeare. He wrote it as a line in a play making Hamlet declare, "O God, I could be bounded in a nutshell, and count my self a King of infinite space." Ever since then, we've used that idiom to refer to anything that has been reduced to a bare bones summary. Thanks Bill.
