What I Didn't Say

Humility--I never was a particularly humble person,  although over the years, I have been humbled a lot.  Rather than being humble, though, I tended to be self-conscious.  Being self-conscious comes across like humility. When you're self-conscious, you are acutely aware of how you're being viewed by others.  Or at least, you're well aware that others could possibly be perceiving you in this way or that.  The result is you look humble because you tend to be withdrawn so you won't make any glaring mistakes in the eyes of others.  At least, that's how it was with me.

Pathetic, isn't it.

Old Age--The great thing about getting older is I don't care so much anymore.  What I mean by that is, I'm not so self-conscious. If you don't like what I do, what I say, or how I look, it doesn't crush me like it once did.  On the other hand, I've been around long enough to know I'm not as hot as I used to believe.  Thus, I actually am more humble than I used to be, believe it or not.
