THE KING'S JUSTICE     (Psalm 72:1-7, 10-14)
Delivered on January 3, 2010 to Smith Chapel UMC

What I Didn't Say

Justice
--We've heard it said many times, "There's no justice in this world.  Yet, the prophets called for justice over and over.  Amos said these famous words, "But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream." (Amos 5:24)

Micah likewise said, "He has shown all you people what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." (Micah 6:8)

Sometimes I wonder if the Lord cares if there is justice in this world.  Jesus brought about justice on the cross.  Because of the cross, justice will be carried out.  So does there need to be any more justice in this world when we've got it in the next?

Is the only semblance of justice found in this world the justice we work for as Christians.  Do we care about justice beyond our own lives?  Do we work toward justice for others when we've been denied justice ourselves?

Just Desserts--When I look around, I quickly realize I have not received justice.  I've got too much.  I don't deserve any of it.

I've got good health.  I've got a wife who loves me.  I've got grown children who do me proud.  I've got a Harley Davidson that starts every time I hit the ignition switch (which is a good thing since I know nothing about mechanics).  I've got a fifty-two inch flat screen TV set to watch the Steelers.  I've got a stone patio and an oaken deck to relax after a long day at a cushy job.  I've got money in my pocket and a smile on my face.

I'm a sinner and deserve only death.  How can I be less than ecstatic over the justice that Jesus has provided me?  How can I do less than work for justice for those that have none?  Here I am, Lord...send me.
