What I Didn't Say

Small "g" god
--Webster's dictionary says that a god is a person or thing of supreme value.

Yahweh--the one true God

Sermonizing--If you've hung around the church for very long, you've heard this sermon many times (in different forms of course).  Here it is once more.  We have many gods in our lives...many things (and even persons) that we place into a position of supreme value.  Unfortunately, that makes us polytheists.

We tend to pride ourselves in being monotheistic.  We worship only one god and that god is THE GOD,  God Almighty, YHWH, Jesus, LORD of Lords, KING of Kings, THE Alpha and Omega.
That seems to work on Sunday mornings.  Then we go home to worship the Steelers, the Harley, the kids, and King Stomach.

The long and short of it is, we're pathetic.  We dump the Lord for whatever god comes along and we don't even realize it.  We're big on saying we're Christians, but small on BEING Christians.  If Jesus was really our God, we would at least take Benjamin Franklin's advice of moderation in all things.

In our Christian culture, it seems like we tend to be moderate in one thing only.  That thing, unfortunately, is living for Jesus.  Heaven forbid, someone might refer to us as religious.
